JOB SUMMARY:

Is responsible for the mechanical design and development of commercial security and door hardware products in a concurrent engineering environment; supports prototyping, testing, and releases products into production. Work with Sales to extrapolate technical requirements on custom company products, conducting feasibility and providing a complete bill of materials that meet customer requirements. Performs other duties as required.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Include but are not limited to:

  • Prepares submittal drawings to fulfill Sales order line items designing and developing security and door hardware products using 2D and 3D modeling software.
  • Collaboratively researches and analyzes customer design proposals, specifications, and feasibility.
  • Assists in building and evaluating prototypes for new and custom products. 
  • Assists with product testing with independent test labs and the industry or government regulatory agencies as coordinated with Test Engineering.
  • Creates and maintains technical product documentation including methods of manufacturing in an ERP system (Epicor preferred).
  • Prepares specifications for purchase of materials and equipment as needed.
  • Provides technical assistance to other departments, including Marketing, Manufacturing, Purchasing, Quality Control, Customer Service, Production, etc.
  • Frequently communicates with coworkers and other departments regarding part fabrication, design specification, and product performance.
  • Supports cross-training and professional development of new and existing staff.
  • Supports manager in the development and maintenance of key performance indicators (KPIs) to track concerns, efficiencies, improvement opportunities, etc…
  • Maintains the cleanliness, organization, and safety of the work area; follows safe working practices and wears required personal protective equipment.
  • Follows established procedures and/or guidelines in performing essential job functions to comply with all company policies and applicable legal requirements.
  • Effectively communicates with coworkers, other departments, and external persons via electronic communication, face-to-face, and phone as needed.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution/college or university in mechanical engineering and 5 years of manufacturing-related experience; or an Associate degree in engineering and a minimum of 7 years of experience working as a product designer for a manufacturing environment.

  • Knowledge of commercial security and turnstile products desired.
  • Knowledge of mechanical engineering principles, practices, and techniques.
  • Knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principles used in the production of technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and 3d models.
  • Knowledge of raw materials, production processes, quality control,  and other techniques to maximize the manufacturing of products.
  • Skill in using computer-assisted 3D modeling programs and software.
  • Skill in effectively communicating verbally and in writing and ability to provide leadership.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Knowledge of ERP system creating a bill of materials and routings.
  • Knowledge of advanced mathematics and its applications.
  • Computer proficiency in Word, Excel, and other engineering software applications.
