Protecting Retail Spaces in a Changing Landscape
As retail businesses evolve alongside the rapid growth of e-commerce, curbside pickup and mixed-use developments – where storefronts share space with offices or residences – security must adapt. Whether it’s a standalone shop or part of a multi-level, multi-tenant complex, retail operations need durable, flexible life safety and security hardware that performs under pressure.
Why Modern Security Solutions are Critical to Modern Retail Environments
- High-value inventory: Retail locations often house valuable goods that require physical protection.
- Frequent customer access: High foot traffic increases the need for clear exit paths and controlled entry.
- Employee safety: Staff must be protected whether it’s regular hours and after-hours operations.
- Theft prevention: Both internal and external theft are ongoing concerns in retail.
- Multi-use buildings: Retail spaces often share structures with residential or office units, requiring smart separation of access.
- Rise of e-commerce: Retailers are increasingly using warehouses and fulfillment centers instead of traditional storefronts, demanding industrial-grade security for large inventories and logistics operations.
- Curbside and delivery logistics: Securing delivery doors and managing access for curbside pickups and service vendors has become essential for modern customer convenience and loss prevention.

How Fast Can Your School Lockdown?
How Fast Can Your School Lockdown?
Preventing entry by anyone posing an immediate threat can be a serious challenge. If it’s your responsibility to protect students and staff from intruders, you have a choice: rely on traditional manual locking for front doors, or install a Lockdown System to instantly secure the main doors.
In these situations, timing is truly everything. With the Lockdown System EasyKit, a centrally located control switch secures panic hardware devices on the doors, saving precious time. There’s no searching for keys, no need for someone to run to the front doors and attempt to secure them while under pressure. Just one person pushing the Lockdown button can control the threat.
Learn more about the lockdown system
Unfortunately, it is an accepted fact that occasionally schools have to go on lockdown. What that term means in individual schools varies as much as the size of school districts across the country. Some schools define a lockdown as securing all exterior school doors. Others add all classroom doors to the exterior and could throw in the cafeteria, library, and gymnasium. Whatever the term means to your school district, one key question remains foremost in the minds of school administrators, facility and security directors. What is the safest, fastest, easiest and most cost effective means of locking down our campus?
White Paper
Detex has developed a white paper on school security. Read the problems campuses face and solutions to fix them. Get your copy of the Detex white paper today.
Industries
The Industries pages is designed for end users, architects and other visitors that are unfamiliar with door hardware and Detex. Industries is intended to function as a guide to help connect the best products with specific applications.
Detex has added a list of most common industries. Customers simply select the industry their project is in or related to. When clicked on, the category includes a 3D building image specific to the industry with labels that illustrates how various Detex products and systems can be used within each application.
Once an application has been decided upon, click on the corresponding name in the legend and a list of products and systems for that application will be provided. When one is clicked on, it will lead to riser diagrams (shown above) that display examples of how the hardware looks. Each of these links then lead to a corresponding product information page.

Retail Security
Retail Security

Our world is full of threats both external and internal. Most facilities have addressed access control and the securing of main doors, but those should be measures of last resort. There are steps you can take—some that you may not have considered—to mitigate the threat before it arrives at your front door.
Supplemental security measures, such as securing perimeter entrances and installing devices to warn when secondary entry points are compromised, can increase your ability to protect your environment against threats in retail locations, distribution centers, or the corporate campus. Examining security and safety from a holistic viewpoint can help prevent threats from materializing. You can enhance life safety and security measures on your property with the addition of cutting-edge technology that works in conjunction with your existing systems, such as:
1. Delayed egress devices with alarms
2. Heavy-duty door with heavy-duty lock and hinge bolts
3. Door prop alarms
4. Tailgate detection systems
5. Lockdown systems
Ensuring all the pieces of technology will work together is key. Manufacturers and some dealers will create a kit to fit your application that includes best-in class products along with wiring and riser illustrations to fit your application. Be careful of specification writers who supply only a list of products without a wiring diagram or information on how the items are integrated together. Failing to install the items correctly can create years of headaches and wasted money. Ensure the supplier understands your needs and offers time-tested products. Additionally, make sure they can support the installation with wiring diagrams, riser illustrations, and technical support.

More than 22,000 Detex EAX-500 door alarms were installed in about 1,500 New York City elementary schools by the close of 2015. The project fulfills “Avonte’s Law,” which was passed after the death of Avonte Oquendo, an autistic teen who ran unnoticed from his Queens school in 2014. The law prompted the NYC Department of Education (NYCDOE) to evaluate public-school buildings for audible exterior-door alarms on unlocked security doors, changing school security forever.
To increase student safety, the NYCDOE selected Detex’s EAX-500 door alarm to secure all exterior exits in all schools. The product sounds an alarm at 100dB when someone attempts an unauthorized exit, alerting school staff to potential wandering incidents.
The recently completed alarm installation spans all five of the city’s boroughs and includes thirty school districts. Originally scheduled for a three-year timeline, Detex ramped up EAX-500 production, and Maximum Security Group accelerated installation, to complete the project in just ten months.
“As a company that has manufactured life safety and security door hardware for over a century, we are always proud when our products make a substantial difference in the wellbeing of our users, such as these New York City students,” says Ken Kuehler, Director of Marketing and Sales at Detex Corporation, a New Braunfels, TX-based company.
In addition to drawing immediate attention to wandering incidents, the alarms alert security personnel to all unauthorized security door use, preventing unsanctioned entry to school buildings.
Jim Lengyel, President of Maximum Security Group, the Queens-based locksmith company that installed Detex’s alarms, says he has seen them in action: “The alarm works really well. I have observed kids react to it and notice the signs on the door. They turn around and choose the appropriate exit instead.”
After the project’s successful implementation, the Department of Education approached Lengyel to install similar alarms in all of New York City’s Pre-Kindergarten buildings. His company will use a combination of Detex’s EAX-500 door alarms and Detex Value Series panic hardware to secure about 400 Pre-K locations.
“We recommended Detex products for the Pre-K buildings after seeing how well they worked in elementary schools,” explained Lengyel. “Beyond installing alarms, we will be bringing all of these Pre-Kindergarten doors up to current fire code regulations. We’re using Detex’s life safety products to make it happen.”
