Detex Offers Aluminum Option in Advantex Exit Hardware

Detex Corporation, manufacturer of life safety and security door hardware for commercial buildings, now provides an aluminum exit device option for budget-conscious project planners.

Part of the premium Advantex line, this aluminum (628) exit device fills the need for economy without lowering the Detex standard for quality electrified functions. As always with Detex products, full customer support is included.

“Customers such as school districts are especially concerned about saving every bit they can, so they need to “value engineer” their projects,” said Ken Kuehler, National Accounts Manager at Detex. “This aluminum option for high-grade panic hardware is a practical solution.”

NYC Department of Education increases student safety using Detex Door Alarms

More than 22,000 Detex EAX-500 door alarms were installed in about 1,500 New York City elementary schools by the close of 2015. The project fulfills “Avonte’s Law,” which was passed after the death of Avonte Oquendo, an autistic teen who ran unnoticed from his Queens school in 2014. The law prompted the NYC Department of Education (NYCDOE) to evaluate public-school buildings for audible exterior-door alarms on unlocked security doors, changing school security forever.

To increase student safety, the NYCDOE selected Detex’s EAX-500 door alarm to secure all exterior exits in all schools. The product sounds an alarm at 100dB when someone attempts an unauthorized exit, alerting school staff to potential wandering incidents.

The recently completed alarm installation spans all five of the city’s boroughs and includes thirty school districts. Originally scheduled for a three-year timeline, Detex ramped up EAX-500 production, and Maximum Security Group accelerated installation, to complete the project in just ten months.

“As a company that has manufactured life safety and security door hardware for over a century, we are always proud when our products make a substantial difference in the wellbeing of our users, such as these New York City students,” says Ken Kuehler, Director of Marketing and Sales at Detex Corporation, a New Braunfels, TX-based company.

In addition to drawing immediate attention to wandering incidents, the alarms alert security personnel to all unauthorized security door use, preventing unsanctioned entry to school buildings.

Jim Lengyel, President of Maximum Security Group, the Queens-based locksmith company that installed Detex’s alarms, says he has seen them in action: “The alarm works really well. I have observed kids react to it and notice the signs on the door. They turn around and choose the appropriate exit instead.”

After the project’s successful implementation, the Department of Education approached Lengyel to install similar alarms in all of New York City’s Pre-Kindergarten buildings. His company will use a combination of Detex’s EAX-500 door alarms and Detex Value Series panic hardware to secure about 400 Pre-K locations.

“We recommended Detex products for the Pre-K buildings after seeing how well they worked in elementary schools,” explained Lengyel. “Beyond installing alarms, we will be bringing all of these Pre-Kindergarten doors up to current fire code regulations. We’re using Detex’s life safety products to make it happen.”

Detex Marks Passing Of Carl Dean, Industry Icon And Inspiration To All Those He Trained And Mentored

Detex Corporation has lost a valued colleague and a true friend with the unexpected passing of Carl Dean on September 19, while traveling in the Northwest. As National Training Manager, Carl was doing what he loved best – traveling and teaching people around the world.

One of the best-known names in the field, Carl had more than four decades of experience to his credit, and job. After many years as a trainer for exit device manufacturers, Dean contracted with Detex in 2007 to continue teaching and training.

Known for his keen wit and immense knowledge of the industry, especially in commercial builders’ hardware and exit devices, he brought his own special instructional style to his job. His career included teaching code classes, and continuing education classes to architects and specification writers. He traveled and taught door hardware installation at The Council of Carpenters apprentice and training program, as well as classes for the Door and Hardware Institute.

“Carl was dedicated to teaching others about door hardware and understanding building codes, while making it fun and interesting, too,” said Ken Kuehler, Director of Marketing and Sales at Detex. “He will be greatly missed, both personally and professionally.”

Dean was an electrical engineering graduate of Purdue University at Indianapolis. He leaves his wife Mireille, son Barry, daughter Lisa and their extended family.

New Detex Website Features Idea Center And Support Videos

Detex Corporation, manufacturer of high-quality life safety and security door hardware, has redesigned and expanded its website to include special new features and more extensive product information for customer research. Now, end users or architects or anyone who may be unfamiliar with commercial door hardware products can easily explore the possibilities for their own requirements.

The site is designed to provide easy access not only to life safety and security door hardware, but to integrated door security systems, and safety and security risk management products. With fewer clicks, visitors can reach their specific areas of interest.

Two new sections are especially popular with site visitors. In the Idea Center, customers choose an industry – retail, healthcare, government, education, or transportation – and click to see products and applications for their purposes. Each category includes 3D building images illustrating products and systems in place, so that it’s simple to tailor systems for any application.

In the Help & Support section, visitors can see installation videos, videos on how to change batteries, installation instructions, product templates, contact information for technical support, guard tour support, and information on scheduled training sessions.

“We’ve even included a site video that explains how to navigate so that you find what you’re looking for right away,” said Ken Kuehler, Director of Marketing and Sales at Detex. “Customers get a wider perspective on all the systems and products available, so they can compare product applications, side by side.”

Detex Helps Locksmiths Equip North Carolina Senior Center

Detex Corporation, manufacturer of high-quality life safety and security door hardware, recently helped fill an important need for residents of a senior living center in Oxford, North Carolina.

Late last year, a volunteer worker at the center noticed that some of the seniors were experiencing difficulty getting in and out of the restrooms because they couldn’t handle the heavy doors. When she talked about her concern with her husband (the late Jake Jakubuwski, author, teacher, and technical editor for The National Locksmith Magazine), he contacted Gary Hackney at Detex about the situation. Detex agreed to donate two AO19 Automatic Door Operators to the center, if volunteer installers could be found. Jake called on two installer friends (Steve Bright, of J&S Locksmith in Fayetteville, NC, and Scott Spencer, of Absolute Security in Roxboro, NC), who volunteered to install the units at no cost to the center.

Detex sent sales engineer Scott Peck and factory rep Dave Boardman to help guide the installation. Jake organized an installation class with these experts, and invited several other area locksmiths to watch and learn. Not only did the residents gain easier restroom access, but the locksmiths found that the AO19 is easier to install than they’ve come to expect.

Exclusive to Detex, the AO19 Series Automatic Operated Door System is the only AOD that offers the advantage of one-box installation. The system’s door opener controls are mounted and pre-wired in one unit, so it’s simple to install, wire and service. It features a super heavy duty, direct drive motor that can operate light or heavy doors in low energy applications. It is available in an EasyKit™ with integrated latch retraction.

“We were pleased to contribute our door operators to the senior center project,” said Ken Kuehler, Director of Marketing and Sales at Detex.  “Thanks to Jake and the volunteer locksmiths, the mission was accomplished. And we hear that the center’s residents are very grateful.”

Detex Guard Tour System Delivers Reliable Reads For Healthcare Facilities

A long-time leader in guard tour equipment, Detex Corporation is continuing the tradition with a complete system for guard tour verification and other data collection tasks. The GCS® ProxiPen System is increasingly in use at healthcare facilities, not only for security rounds, but for daily inspections and preventative maintenance.
